Section 8 Housing Pursue Landlords Charging Extra Rental Fees
June 11, 2018
Landlords who charge fees above and beyond the Section 8 housing voucher will be prosecuted according to an article in the Las Vegas Review Journal. Landlords who are charging tenants additional rental payments beyond the authorized voucher payment are in violation of the housing payment agreement. Tenants cannot pay fees beyond the amount authorized by the voucher contract. Violation of the contract has resulted in very heavy civil fines to the landlords.
Raising the rent $150 per month beyond the amount authorized by Housing Authority can result in fines exceeding $40,000-$50,000. Landlords must be careful in requiring un-authorized payments in their leases or demands. Landlords demanding additional payments but not receiving these payments cannot evict the tenants for non-payment.
Please read your Housing Authority contract to clarify the details of your situation.
