GFCI - Save Yourself Some Time and Aggravation
The power is out again!! Arghh! I was just using my hair dryer and the electric power blinked off. What should I do? Is it a serious problem? Should I call an electrician?
Power outages are frustrating and will occur in the most inopportune times. However, it may not be a serious electrical problem. The problem may be the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet.
Often if an electrical circuit is overloaded with heavy use, the GFCi circuit breaker may pop and break the flow of electrical power before serious damage can occur.
To remedy the situation, turn off the appliance and unplug it from the outlet. There are two small reset buttons normally located between the electrical outlets. If one of the reset buttons is popped outward, press it back into a flat, level posistion. This should restore power to the outlet again. If not, then there could be other problems and an electrician may be necessary.
Before sending an expensive electrician to diagnose your power failure, check to see if the reset buttons are pushed in on your GFCI outlets. It could save lots of time and money.
